Neurological Conditions:

Neurological Physiotherapy

Neurological Physiotherapists use a wide range of concepts, techniques, knowledge and equipment that help in the postural management and rehabilitation of the client with a neurological condition.

There are three fundamental areas that must be considered when treating neurological difficulties: Posture, Movement and Function.

Posture

Posture and control of posture, can be considered the cornerstone for effective movement and function. Without it, it is impossible for normal movement to occur. Postural control must be assessed and optimised as a matter of priority as deficits can impact on so many areas of an individual’s life. Physiotherapists have a key role to play in the management of posture, as physical and emotional deterioration can result if this vital area is not properly addressed.

Movement

Movement allows the freedom and ability needed to function effectively within our environment. Movement disorders are common following neurological damage. They can cause significant problems to an individual who may no longer carry out simple tasks without great difficulty.

There can be many reasons that movement might be impaired. Alterations to muscle tone, or spasticity, where the muscle becomes stiff and difficult to move, is a common symptom that may prevent functional activities. Rehabilitation aims to address these issues in order to allow the individual to access more normal movement patterns and so aid improved function.

Function

The fundamental goal of rehabilitation is to optimise function. To function we of course need movement. The central nervous system is highly task orientated in its organisation. Consequently, individuals need to be allowed opportunities to practice functional, meaningful tasks in order that rehabilitation can be successful.

Neurological Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists work closely together with the aim of giving individuals a way to access and explore their potential and so maximise their functional recovery.
