Neurological Occupational Therapy
Following neurological injury, individuals commonly need to re-learn how to complete functional tasks or perhaps learn new ways of completing them. These difficulties can be due to physical and/or cognitive deficits so are very often complex and multi-factorial.
Occupational Therapists will engage the individual and aid their participation in functional tasks so that the individual’s strengths and weaknesses can be identified.
They will set up plans of treatment using everyday activities based on the individual’s goals.
Once baseline assessments have been completed, activities may be graded and then adapted to challenge and motivate the individual.
Various functional tasks may be used such as;
- Personal care
- Domestic activities
- Home and community mobility
- Planning and budgeting
- Shopping
- Work and vocational tasks
Ultimately, the aim is for the individual to increase their levels of independence and develop strategies that will help them to function better both physically, cognitively, psychologically and socially.
